Thanks for the link and the information. I don't think "mahalo" is of Portuguese origin, because "thank you" is "obrigado" for men and "obrigada" for women, meaning "obliged." Portuguese might have another word I don't know about. Since Hawai'ian has only about 12 letters, lots of things get changed before they're adopted into the language.
One of these years, I will learn the names for different kinds of lava. These seem to have made their way into English for people who study volcanoes. I was visiting Sunset Crater, and there's one place where there is some pretty rough lava, and they had signs naming different kinds of lava using those words.
wow! this is an absolutely amazing picture of kauai!! Its one of my favorite places, and i have my share of photos from there, but none were captured quite like this!! KUDOS XD
