"Mahalo" I know, but not "nui loa". In the interest of my learning more Hawai'ian, please let me know what the phrase means. Mahalo. ;)

[link] mahalo Thank you. Possibly of portugese origin. Sometimes seen with the modifiers "Nui Loa ", meaning "Big".

Thanks for the link and the information. I don't think "mahalo" is of Portuguese origin, because "thank you" is "obrigado" for men and "obrigada" for women, meaning "obliged." Portuguese might have another word I don't know about. Since Hawai'ian has only about 12 letters, lots of things get changed before they're adopted into the language.

One of these years, I will learn the names for different kinds of lava. These seem to have made their way into English for people who study volcanoes. I was visiting Sunset Crater, and there's one place where there is some pretty rough lava, and they had signs naming different kinds of lava using those words.
